Michigan officials conditionally approved 15 separate companies Thursday to launch online sportsbooks, nearly all of which also earned approval for online casino gaming.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board indicated that none of the conditional licensees will go live before the end of 2020, but the latest approval indicates most if not all will be live by early 2021.
The MGCB must sign off on each provisional license holder individually, said the board’s executive director, Richard Kalm, in a statement. Kalm said the launch depends on how quickly applicants can fulfill final testing requirements, including independent testing certification and occupational licensing for key employees.
Michigan law also requires at least one commercial casino and one Native American casino to earn approval before online sports betting can begin.

Officials believe this process will conclude in January, some time ahead of the upcoming Super Bowl, which is traditionally the most wagered-upon sporting event in the country.
